She was God. Not as the christians see HIM, of the Jews of the Muslims. She is simply the overseer. And death is her son. "You're late," She said from the darkness, "And who's this?"
Joe explained his situation and pleaded with his mother to spare her.

She smiled. "So you've fallen, haven't you?" She inquired. She looked down at Her son in pity. "I can not spare her without equivalent exchange, you know that. Few are willing to do it."
Joe bit his lip. "Mother, be reasonable," he said, "Don't say you can't break your own rules."
She nodded and shrugged. "I can," She said, "but why? So you can go back to extending her father's life just to be with her? No, I won't allow you to be who you are anymore."

Joe heard her and turned toward her. "Mother, do what you will," he said, "just let her live. Remember that woman's last request? He daughter must live long, or I've just broken a promise."
She smiled. "As you wish, My son," She said. She spread Her infinite arms of darkness and suddenly he was sitting back in his chair and she was in the bed.

Joe began to come to the realization that his senses were less acute. He felt cold for the first time in a long time. He would stub his toe and it hurt a hell of a lot worse. He seeked out Lucian.

"Yes sir," he said, "this will be my last duty." He touched his forehead. "Would you dislike me in the after life if I told you that I think I love your daughter?"

In the next few seconds Lucian's spirit left this world and Joe stood there in awe. He felt, with the spirit, he power, gone. He was now mortal, completely mortal. It kind of made his heart hurt.
