"Well," he began, "I was born to a woman in love with the world, the world as a natural thing, not man-made. She believed many things that were not highly looked upon by people. She taught me her beliefs, and always told me that I didn't have to believe the same thing as her, but that she would like me to. Very different from my father. He was the only one to state that what my mother believed was wrong and have her condemned for it. She was killed when I was seven for witchcraft. My father was the judge who tried her. I ran away before her execution and went to New York city. I went to school, paid for by a kindly old lady with too much money and not a lot to do with it. I recently became a Constable and have been trying hard to convince my superiors that punishments should be for crimes that were actually committed." He took a deep breath. "My life in two minutes."

she listened intently, frowning slightly at what his fathe did to his own wife. it was sad, to lose ones parents at seven. "so how do you peroove the men punished are innocent?"

"Well, I doubt any one of the confessions are true," he said, "I'll ask you a question. If you were accused of witchcraft and given the choice to hang or confess to it, would you lie and save your life or deny it and hang?"

she scooted back and leaned against the wall. "well....i wouldnt like to die but i wont lie. i guess i would hang than be known as a lier. even if i was innocent."

"See, that is the nobler path," he said, "I'd say the same thing now, but if it ever truly came to that I'd probably confess to anything. You see, most people currently in prison in New York city have that frame of mind. The thing with the judicial system is that the people in power don't look for actual crime, they look for people to accuse when it fits their needs."

"To tell you the truth, that's why I'm here," he said, "I'm here to prove that I can reveal a criminal using more modern methods than the medieval ways still used today. Yet now, I suppose it's hopeless being that the one behind the murders is a dead..." He shivered, feeling once again his fear of the horseman.

He rubbed his eyes as if he were finally feeling the effect of not sleeping the night before. "Not something I want to do," he said, "Leastways not now. Do you now anyone who knows the woods well?"

He rested his head on an elbow on his knee. "Well, I'm looking for some one who wouldn't be afraid to help me through the woods," he said, "to find the Horseman's resting place."
